Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
