New research indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
